The City of Madras Police Department is accepting applications for Lateral Police Officers. This recruitment will also be used to determine an eligibility list to be maintained at the discretion of the HR department.

To apply for a Lateral Officer position, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent;
  • Able to read and write the English language;
  • Have a valid driver's license and able to meet the City's driving standards;
  • Have no disqualifying criminal history or felony convictions; and
  • Able to pass a thorough background investigation/medical and psychological exam and drug screening.

Final evaluation of eligibility will be at the discretion of the Police Chief based on background and experience.

This opportunity Is for Individuals who:
  • Currently possess a Basic Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training “DPSST” certification or other equivalent local, state or federal certification as a Police Officer or Sheriff's Deputy;
  • Have successfully completed a Field Training Program;
  • Have at least one year of full-time equivalent work experience as a certified law enforcement professional.

      Additionally…

  • Out of state candidates must be able to obtain police certification through DPSST without having to attend the 16-week police academy. If attendance is required, applicant may be considered for Entry Level Police Officer.
  • Oregon lateral applicants who are currently employed, must be in good standing, and have completed the DPSST Police Academy.
  • Oregon lateral applicants who are not currently employed, must have left their agency in good standing.
    • Military Police, Federal Law Enforcement, Corrections and Parole/Probation DO NOT QUALIFY as a Lateral Police Officer
The Strongest Candidates Will:
  • Have completed a two-year degree or vocational training in criminal justice, police science or related field;
  • Be bilingual in Spanish (5% additional incentive pay for bilingual);
  • Have at least one or more years of full-time equivalent work experience as a certified law enforcement professional.

  • Annual Base Salary Range $61,907 - $88,006; Lateral hires may be placed within the salary step range based on qualified experience.
  • $6000 Relocation/Moving/Housing  
  • All uniforms and gear provided 
  • 100% Employer Paid PERS - Make sure you check the agencies you are applying for as many will have their employees pay this, causing an instant reduction in pay (6%) - we do not!
  • Five Percent (5%) Base Pay for Bilingual (Spanish)
  • Longevity Pay (1%, 1.5%, 2%)
  • Certification Pay (3%, 4%, 5%)
  • 40 hours of vacation during probation; additional vacation may be based on prior qualified experience
  • Health Insurance in 31 days or less (low premiums w/generous annual health savings contributions paid by employer)
  • Ten paid holidays (includes 8 hours floating holiday pay)
  • Wellness benefits
  • Paid vacation:
    • 1 year = 5 days
    • 2 year = 15 days
    • 5 years = 20 days
    • 10 years = 25 days
    • + 1 year for each additional year after 15 years of service w/ a 6 week maximum

Madras Police Employees Association contract is available upon request. Current collective bargaining agreement is effective 2022 – 2025.
