Madras Municipal Airport

Madras Municipal Airport is a vital hub of activity, offering a wide range of services and amenities tailored to meet the needs of pilots and aviation enthusiasts. The airport supports a variety of operations, including critical services for life flight and fire crews. With two paved runways, 100LL and Jet A fuel facilities available 24/7, rental cars, tie-downs, and a suite of pilot amenities such as a lounge and even tent camping, the airport is designed to cater to every need of visiting aviators. Its role extends to hosting community events with hundreds of attendees, like the Airshow of the Cascades. Far from being just a point of arrival and departure, Madras Municipal Airport is a thriving community hub, industrial center, and historical symbol of the region's aviation sector.

From Warplanes to Wing Shows: The History of Madras Municipal Airport

The Madras Municipal Airport has its roots intertwined in World War II's history, a symbol of both aviation history and local heritage in Madras. Initially established in the late 1930s, it transformed in 1942 when the US Army Air Corps took over, renaming it the "Madras Army Airfield." This period marked its use as a training ground for B-17 Flying Fortress and Bell P-63 King Cobra squadrons, contributing to the Allied efforts during the war. Two of the hangars constructed during this time remain in use, standing as reminders of the airport's rich historical significance. The north hangar has earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places.

After World War II, the facility was reverted to the city and rechristened as the Madras Municipal Airport. Today it's an operational airport and home to a living museum, the Erickson Aircraft Collection, the largest flying private collection of World War II aircraft in the world. The collection and the annual Airshow of the Cascades held at the airport bring aviation enthusiasts together, celebrating the legacy of flight and the role of Madras in aviation history. The blend of historical preservation and contemporary functionality embodies the Airport's relevance to the community today.

Apron Reconstruction Project

The Apron Reconstruction / Fencing Project began on March 11, 2024. This project has been funded through AIP Federal grants, ODA COAR grants, and the City of Madras to ensure that our airport continues to be maintained at high standards. Our airport's main runway 16 / 34 and attached taxiways were reconstructed between 2015 (runway) and 2019 (taxiways). The current project completes the reconstruction of the main apron (ramp) in front of the General Aviation Building, self-serve fuel kiosk, and the two WWII hangars. This project also includes installing fencing near aviation fuel tanks and other areas that will have increased security. The project will be complete this summer, 2024.

Timeline: The project will be completed in June, with the final asphalt markings completed in August.

Currently, the airport is working with Abby, a high school student who hopes to pursue an education and career in aviation. Abby is learning firsthand about the environment and world of aviation by performing daily tasks in assisting the operations of the airport.
