Snow Removal Information
Each year, the City of Madras Public Works Department performs snow removal procedures based on the adopted Snow Removal Resolution (see below). The Snow and inclement weather policy for the Public Works Department is administered by the Operations Manager. The Operations Manager has acting authority to manage the Public Works personnel during a snow event in order to respond to City’s needs. If the Operations Manager is unavailable the Public Works Director will assign a manager/supervisor/lead person to manage personnel during the event.
Where snow has reached a depth of approximately six inches and is not expected to immediately melt, the Public Works Department may initiate snow removal operations according to the approved plan unless there is a compelling reason to deviate from this plan. When it snows, you can help the Public Works Department plow curb-to-curb by keeping the street in front of your home or business clear of obstacles such as parked vehicles, basketball hoops, trailer ramps, garbage cans, etc.
Snow removal will be conducted along streets according to their priority in facilitating the movement of emergency vehicles, school busses and local traffic. The first priority will be those streets indicated on the map as primary routes. The next priority will be those streets indicated on the map as secondary routes. All other streets not indicated as primary or secondary on the map will be evaluated for need by the Public Works Department once the primary and secondary streets are cleared. Remember to slow down when driving in snow - even if you have 4-wheel drive.
Additionally, City Ordinances 12.40.070-12.40.090 dictate property owners are responsible for keeping the walkways in front of their properties clear of debris - which includes snow.
If you have questions please contact the City of Madras Public Works Office Coordinator at 541-325-0313 or mquinn@ci.madras.or.us.
