Police Chief Tanner Stanfill Resigns After 22 Years with Madras Police Department
Date: October 14, 2022 – Immediate Release
Contacts: Charo Miller, HR & Administrative Director 541-325-0312 or
Steve Bartol, Director of Police Services 541-475-2424
Madras, OR – Tanner Stanfill, Police Chief for Madras Police Department submitted his resignation October 14, 2022, after going on medical leave in July of this year. Chief Stanfill began his law enforcement career as a Reserve Officer with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office in 1998. In 1999, he became a Reserve Officer with Madras Police Department and within a year he was hired as a patrol officer under Chief Daniel Kneale. He moved up to the rank of Detective in 2004 under Chief Tom Adams and continued moving up in the ranks becoming Assistant Chief in 2011. Upon Chief Adams’ retirement in 2015, he was promoted to Police Chief.
During his career, Chief Stanfill received many commendations, thank you letters from citizens, and letters of appreciation for his support of programs to prevent domestic violence, child abduction, drug use among children, family violence, and so much more. He demonstrated professionalism, advocated for his community, and had a special affinity for working with youth. In his resignation letter, he stated, “It has been an honor to work with the Madras Police Department and serve the Madras Community. I wish the absolute best to the Madras Police Department, City of Madras and Madras Community.”
In late July 2022, when it was determined that Chief Stanfill would be out on extended medical leave, the Madras City Council appointed Retired Milwaukie Police Chief Steve Bartol, to serve as the temporary Director of Madras Police Services. His primary responsibilities have included providing leadership, administrative duties, and recruiting patrol officers, in addition to overseeing day-to-day business. With the resignation of Chief Stanfill, he will now assist the City in the recruitment of a new Police Chief.
Currently, Madras Police Department is recruiting Entry-Level and Lateral Police Officers. Information on those positions can be found at www.ci.madras.or.us/jobs. The recruitment for Police Chief will begin as soon as is possible and will be advertised widely.
