Case No. Case #M23-1046
Contact:  Chief Tim Plummer 541-475-2424

At approximately 12:50 pm on September 13, 2023, Madras Police were dispatched to a theft at the Human Bean Coffee kiosk on NE Plum Drive. The arriving officer saw a male matching the description of the suspect crossing Highway 26 and approached the suspect. The suspect fled southbound on foot with the officer in pursuit while calling for additional resources.

Once officers were out of their vehicles beginning to pursue the suspect on foot, they heard shots being fired. For their safety and the safety of the surrounding community, they held back until additional law enforcement officers arrived. At this point, the suspect began heading up a hill above where the officers were staged. Within minutes additional resources arrived and officers had eyes on the suspect, so they began a foot pursuit and 50-year-old Christopher Chilton of Klamath Falls was taken into custody at gunpoint by Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies. He is being charged with Escape III and misdemeanor theft and will be arraigned tomorrow, September 14th, in Jefferson County Circuit Court at 1:00 pm.

“Madras Police Department would like to thank our Central Oregon law enforcement partners who participated in this incident. Mutual aid and the professionalism of every officer was key to the safe arrest of this individual,” stated Madras Police Chief Tim Plummer.
